Program Purposes and Goals

The goal of Iglesias Abundantes is to strengthen and support Texas Hispanic Baptist congregations through a congregational learning experience that will help them explore the context of their ministry, gain clarity about their unique God-given mission, adapt their ministries, and thrive in service to their communities and the Kingdom.

This program will focus on Hispanic Baptist congregations in Texas that are facing the unique challenges of a ministry setting in communities with (1) multiple languages (Spanish, English, and bilingual), (2) diverse immigrant realities (First Generation Immigrant, bi-cultural Second Generation, assimilated Third Generation), and a growing younger population (Millennials and Gen-Z’s).

The program design is based on Tim Shapiro’s congregational learning experience as outlined in “How Your Congregation Learns” and includes: appropriate resourcing help and the phases of Challenge, Exploration, Discovery, and Implementation. Convención proposes to create an opportunity for up to fifty (50) Hispanic Baptist congregations that will provide the following:

1. Abundante Exploration Retreat: Will bring together leaders of Hispanic Baptist congregations in a year-long congregational learning experience. This experience begins with an intensive multi-day Abundante Launch Retreat. At this retreat, the participants will explore the congregational learning experience, explore the social and cultural challenges they face, and begin their work to clearly define their challenge.

2. Abundante Journey: Next, the congregational leaders will participate in a facilitated monthly experience that will lead them through the phases of Challenge, Exploration, and Discovery. Throughout this process, we will provide the congregations resourcing help in the appropriate language and context. The Project Director will help provide the participants with interactive learning opportunities, resources, and tracking on the progress of their congregational journey.

3. Abundante Implementation Retreat: At this retreat, the congregational leaders will reconnect, assess their progress, and propose solutions their challenges. The leaders will participate in a facilitated experience that will lead them to develop a one-year Abundante Plan for the implementation of their solution. They will learn about project implementation and, upon meeting established criteria, each congregation will have the opportunity to apply for a $9,000 Abundante Stipend to resource and execute their congregational plan.
